Import of drones banned in India

The Government of India on Wednesday, 10th Feb, 2022 announced to ban the import on drones in India with immediate effect, except for research and development and defence and security purposes to promote Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Import for R&D and defence and security purposes will require due clearance. However, import of drone components will not require any approvals.

Import of drones by government entities, educational institutions recognised by central or state government, the government recognised R&D entities and drone manufacturers for R&D purposes will be allowed in CBU (Completely Built Up), CKD (Completely Knocked Down) or SKD (Semi Knocked Down) form. This will be subject to import authorisation issued by DGFT in consultation with concerned line ministries.

“With the liberalized Drone Rules, 2021 drone airspace map, drone PLI scheme, drone certification scheme and single window DigitalSky platform in place, this is a good time to invest in the Indian Drone industry,”  said a senior aviation ministry official.
