In a dramatic turn of events, the Chatra district's forest officials are rushing to find the unknown predator that injured more than a dozen residents, including children, in multiple Itkhori district villages earlier this week. In addition to causing bodily harm, this elusive species has terrorised the impacted area. Forest officials are using modern technology and community vigilance to address the escalating situation.
Drones and Surveillance Cameras: The High-Tech Approach
Recently, the Chatra forest department used two powerful thermal imaging drones that were borrowed from the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) to enhance its search operations. These recent upgrades to their armoury, in addition to an already-existing drone, are crucial for nighttime operations. The thermal imaging capabilities enable the drones to detect movement even in the pitch-dark hours, significantly increasing the chances of locating the predator.
In addition to the drones, six surveillance cameras were strategically installed on Thursday night at various high-risk locations. These cameras are intended to monitor key areas where the animal might roam, helping the officials identify and track its movements.
On-Ground Efforts: A Day of Exhaustive Searching
The technological advancements are complemented by relentless efforts on the ground. Under the direction of range officer Surya Bhushan Kumar, a committed group of 20 forest officials has been screening through dense undergrowth, riverbanks, and possible hiding places close to residential areas.
The crew covered a big area of land on Thursday by working nonstop from early in the morning until late at night. Unfortunately, they were unable to find any conclusive evidence, thus the predator's name and whereabouts remain unknown.

The predator’s unidentified nature has added an element of suspense, forcing villagers to take extra precautions.
