AI, and Drone swarms: Ukraine’s 2025 Defence Tech Priorities

Ukraine’s battle for sovereignty has underscored one undeniable reality—technology is the ultimate force multiplier. Over the past three years, the country has adapted innovation to counterbalance Russia’s significant advantages in manpower, firepower, and resources. While technology alone cannot level the battlefield, it has allowed Ukraine to minimize the impact of Russia’s superior numbers and funding.

As 2025 is progressing, Ukraine’s defence strategy hinges on staying ahead in this tech race. The rapid emergence of homegrown defence tech companies since the full-scale invasion has already transformed the battlefield.

These firms have introduced game-changing solutions, ensuring Ukraine remains a step ahead. Their role will only become more crucial in the coming year.

Interceptor Drones: A Necessity, Not a Luxury

Ukraine is becoming a testing site for extensive drone fighting, which has changed the face of modern warfare. Since 2022, these airborne warriors have taken center stage, serving as both attack and reconnaissance units. However, with the enemy deploying its own fleet of drones, the demand for effective countermeasures has surged.

In April 2024, Ukraine responded by holding a national contest to find the best interceptor drones. Dozens of local drone manufacturers presented their best solutions as part of this program. One notable variant is currently being used on strategic fronts including Kursk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia and has already recorded about 20 confirmed kills against Russian surveillance drones.

These interceptor drones are essential in eliminating threats before they have a chance to transmit information or inflict damage.

Reducing Dependence on Foreign Drone Supplies

Chinese-made drones have been a vital component of Ukraine's attack and reconnaissance efforts for many years. However, this dependence brings risks—supply chain disruptions or geopolitical shifts could limit access to these crucial tools.

Ukrainian drone manufacturers have been working diligently to create domestic alternatives in recognition of this.

This shift is a major step toward self-reliance, ensuring that Ukraine’s defense capabilities are not at the mercy of external suppliers.

The AI Revolution in Warfare

Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept—it is already reshaping how battles are fought. In 2024, Ukraine took a significant leap forward by integrating AI into its drone technology.

The latest advancements allow drones to lock onto pre-designated targets even during the final phase of flight, reducing their vulnerability to Russian electronic warfare tactics, which often rely on disrupting communication links between drones and their operators.

But Ukraine is not stopping there. Developers are now working on drones that will rely on AI not just for targeting but throughout their entire flight path.

This would enable greater autonomy, reducing human intervention and improving precision. If successful, this next generation of AI-driven drones could revolutionize modern warfare, making electronic jamming tactics far less effective.

Long-Range Strike Capabilities: Taking the Fight to the Enemy

The battle changed course in 2024 when Ukraine demonstrated that Russia's territory was no longer inaccessible. The message was clear: no place is safe thanks to an expanding fleet of domestically made long-range strike drones, some of which can reach targets more than 1,000 kilometres away.

This strategic shift forced Russia to divert resources to domestic defense, stretching its military thinner across multiple fronts.

With further advancements expected in 2025, Ukraine will likely expand its long-range strike capabilities, adding new layers of complexity to Russia’s war planning. The ability to strike deep into enemy territory not only disrupts supply chains but also impacts morale, making this a key focus for Ukraine’s defense industry moving forward.

The Road Ahead: Innovation as a Survival Strategy

The war in Ukraine has proven that technological innovation is no longer just an advantage—it is a necessity for survival. With Russia’s overwhelming resources, Ukraine’s best hope lies in developing advanced solutions that neutralize these advantages.

The ongoing advancements in drone technology, artificial intelligence, and long-range strike capabilities will play a defining role in shaping the next phase of the conflict.
